No! We are open to volunteers between 12-3 every Saturday and Sunday. Just show up. If you're with a large group (5+ people) please let us know ahead of time via the contact form.

We ask that you sign in via the sign-in sheet when you arrive.

Be sure to bring a hat, water and snacks, and sunscreen. Wear closed-toe shoes — sandals and flip-flops aren't allowed. We have some gardening gloves available on site, but you're welcome to bring your own if you'd prefer!

Everyone is welcome to volunteer regardless of skill level or experience. Volunteering with us is a great way to learn more about gardening and build your skills. Feel free to ask questions and explore!

Tasks involve anything from planting, weeding, watering, mulching, composting, tidying, harvesting and more. Every day is different.

The Learning Garden sits on LAUSD property, so it's a drug- and alcohol-free environment with no smoking or vaping. We're an organic garden — no pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or GMO seeds; instead we mulch, plant for pollinators, and compost. We also ask everyone to treat other volunteers, supervisors, and the garden with respect; theft, property damage, or disruptive behavior can mean being asked not to return.

Sign in at the sign-in table — this matters for insurance coverage and our records. Then check in with a supervisor, who will go over the tools you'll be using and help you pick a task. Start small, take frequent water and shade breaks, and ask questions along the way. Before you head out, turn off any hoses, return tools to the tool area, and sign out.
